Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.
Passage 1
Today the game reserves(獵物保護區)of East Africa are facing a number of threats. (76)Although they earn considerable revenue(收入) by attracting tourists, they take up land which is increasingly sought by the local people. While these reserves feed and protect animals, they are in danger of turning into barren areas or deserts. Trees, shrubs and grass are gradually being eaten by grazing herds.
Another problem is to be found in the changing attitudes of the animals themselves. Many of them are losing their hereditary(天生)fear of man. In this way they may become a danger to visitors and thus to themselves. Attacks on vehicles are beginning to increase, and it is possible that the problems will become serious in a few years’ time.
The problem of shortage of land is not a simple one. (77) As the population increases, more and more people look hungrily at the land set aside for game reserves. They claim that a Government’s first duty is to its inhabitants and not to tourists or to wild animals. Despite the income obtained from tourism, this is an argument which it is difficult to answer satisfactorily.
1.
The best title of this passage is ______.
A problems Facing East African Tourists
B african Wild Animals Becoming More Dangerous
C the Increasing Popularity of Game Reserves
D some Problems of East African Game Reserves
2.
Why may local people look hungrily at the game reserves?
A They may wish to visit them frequently.
B They may seek land for their own cultivation (耕種).
C The animals may be a danger to them and their village.
D They may dislike living in a deserted plac
答案:B
[分析] 第三段談到,由於“shortage of land”和“the population increases”,因此“people look hungrily at the land set aside for game reserves”,故本題選B。
3.
______ is causing soil erosion(侵蝕)in the game reserves.
A The bad weather
B The disappearance of vegetation which is eaten by the animals
C The violent storms
D The animals
4.
As far as we can tell from the passage, why does the Government bother to maintain game reserves?
A To prevent the people from using the land.
B To reserve the land for building development.
C To obtain income from tourism.
D To stop tourists from making a nuisance(令人討厭)of themselves.
答案:C
[分析] 當地政府保留獵物保護區的主要原因是,“they earn considerable revenue by attracting tourists”,故本題選C。
5.
The word "this" refers to ______ in the last sentence of the passage.
A the income obtained from tourists who park their cars in the town
B the revenue derived from tourists who visit the game reserves
C the problem concerning game reserves in East Africa
D the claim put forward concerning the duty of the Government
答案:D
[分析] 顯然,本句“this”指的是“a Government’s first duty is to...”,故本題選D。
Passage 2
(78)Professor Martin’s report says that children who attend a number of different schools, because their parents have to move around the country, probably make slow progress in their studies. There are also signs, says Professor Martin, that an unusually large number of such children are mentally (精神上) affected.
The professor says, "It’s true. My personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. However, our findings are based on research and not on any personal feelings that I or my assistants may have on the subject."
Captain Thomas James, an Army lecturer for the past 20 years and himself a father of two, said, "I’ve never heard such rubbish. Taking me for example, no harm is done to the education of my children who change schools regularly---if they keep to the same system(系統) ,as in our Army schools. In my experience Army children--and I’ve known quite a few of them--are as well - adjusted(善於適應的)as any others, if not more so. What the Professor doesn’t appear to appreciate is the fact that in such situations children will adapt(適應)much better than grown - ups."
When this was put to Professor Martin, he said that at no time had his team suggested that all such children were backward or mentally affected in some way, but simply that in their experience there was a clear tendency (趨向).
"Our findings show that while the very bright child can deal with regular changes without harming his or her general progress in studies, the majority of children suffer from constantly having to enter a new learning situation.
6.
According to Professor Martin’s report, ______.
A children have to go to different schools because of their parents’ moving around
B children make slow progress because they are mentally affected
C signs are shown that many children are mentally affected by their studies
D changing from one school to another too often has ill effect on children’s studies
7.
Which of the following is true according to what the professor says?
A He doesn’t quite agree with the report.
B The conclusion is reasonable without any personal feelings.
C His feelings has some effect on the research.
D His assistants may have effect on his feelin
8.
From the passage, we know that Captain James’ children ______.
A enjoy changing schools instead of staying in one school
B adapt much better than grown- ups
C discuss the same system regularly with their father
D can get used to the Army school education
9.
In this passage, the view of Captain James is that ______.
A children are generally well- adjusted
B quite a few children don’t keep to the system
C all children are mentally affected in some way
D children can adapt more easily than grown- ups
10.
What is the idea that Professor Martin sticks to?
A Very bright children have rich experience in changing schools
B Changing schools regularly is not good for most children
C Changing schools regularly is good for most children
D Not changing schools regularly is not good for most children
