定語從句和所有的句子一樣時態的變化和選擇體現了說話人的意思和情緒，用什麼樣的時態主要是考慮到主句和從句發生的時間有先後順序，當然也有相對現在而言的將來時。
定語從句 時態
定語從句中由於涉及主句和從句，在這裏也會有時態先後的問題，一般來說如果主句動詞是將來時，從句用一般現在時或者一般過去時。
1.從句表現一般現在時的情況
man who is appointed as a school principal will be a better leader.
被任命爲學校校長人將會是一個更好的.領導者。（用is appointed 不用 will be appointed）
e will be a special regulate for somebody who takes part in the competition next week.
對下週參加比賽的人將會有一個特殊的規則。（不用 will take, 而用 takes 一般現在時）
2.從句表示一般過去時的情況
to speak, those books whose covers were printed red would sale on Chrismas eve.
這麼說吧，那些封面被刷成紅色的書將在聖誕前夕出售。（whose引導的定語從句時態爲一般過去時，主句would sale 爲過去將來時）
fashion show which held in these countries would make an important influence.
在這些國家舉辦的時尚秀將會產生重要的影響。
3.但也有主句和從句都是一致時態的情況
on who will go to watch movies next month will have to book tickets in advance.
在下個月要看電影的人將不得不提前訂票。（主句和從句都用的一般將來時）
cooperation which will be build up between two companies will be a significant event in business.
將要在兩個公司直接建立的合作將會是一個商業界的重大事件。（主句和從句都表示將來）
定語從句的譯法
定語從句可以分爲限制性定語從句和非限制性定語從句兩種,兩類定語從句在翻譯方法上基本類似, 因此我們把它們放在一起介紹。在翻譯定語從句時,我們經常採用下列的翻譯方法:
前 置 法
把英語原文的定語從句翻譯成帶“的”的定語詞組, 放置於被修飾的詞之前, 將英語原文的複合句翻譯成漢語的簡單句, 這種方法一般用於限制性定語從句比較短的情況。
一些較短的具有描述性的非限制性定語從句也可採用前置法, 但沒有限制性定語從句使用得普遍。例如:
例 example, one function of friendship seems to fulfill is that it supports the image we have of ourselves, and confirms the value of the attitudes we hold.
例如, 友誼的一個作用似乎是支持我們在自己心目中的形象, 並使我們持有的價值觀念更加堅定。
例 first two must be equal for all who are being compared, if any comparison in terms of intelligence is to be made. (92年考題)
如果要從智力方面進行任何比較的話, 那麼對所有被比較者來說, 前兩個因素 必須是一樣的。
例 first method is to give a synonym, a word that has nearly the same meaning as the word you wish to define: face for countenance, nervousness for anxiety.
第一種方法是同義詞法, 即給出一個與 要釋義的詞在意義上幾乎相同的, 如用face表示countenance, 用nervousness表示anxiety.
例viourists, in contrast, say that difference in scores are due to the fact that blacks are often deprived of many of the educational and other environmental advantages that whites enjoy. (90年考題)
相反, 行爲主義者認爲, 成績的差異是由於黑人常常被剝奪了白人在教育及其他外界環境方面所享有的許多有利條件而造成的。
