迪斯科，源於 “Disco”這個詞，是“Discotheque”的簡稱，原意是指“供人跳舞的舞廳”，60年代初源於法國。60年代，隨着音樂設備的更新，舞廳裏只要擁有一套唱片播放機就可以完成原來樂隊的工作，並且還可以隨時得到各種不同的音樂，即經濟又實惠。因此，各大舞廳不再僱傭樂隊來伴奏，而是僱傭一名唱片播放員通過播放唱片來提供伴舞音樂。慢慢的，人們把這種由唱片播放出來的跳舞音樂也稱作迪斯科。
DISCO同時也是一種音樂風格，屬於電子音樂的`一種。
80年代，自張國榮的一曲《monica》風靡香港，迪斯科舞曲開始在中國流行。從音樂上看，迪斯科一般以4/4拍爲主，具有強勁的節拍，並且每一拍都很突出;它的速度大約在每分鐘120拍左右;它的結構短小，歌詞簡單，又很多段落的重複。其實，所有的曲子，只要調整一下速度，改成每一拍都很突出的節拍，都可以變成迪斯科舞曲。
