國小英語是希望通過閱讀幫助學生學英語，通過閱讀幫助學生鞏固所學的字詞句，發展聽、說、讀、寫的能力，所以英語閱讀教學的目的與英語閱讀的目的有所不同。
國小英語學習目標以聽說爲主，大量的口頭表達，但是學生到了高年級，如只是聽說，學習能力發展不快。所以各種技能在國小都要培養，才能適應上中學後英語進一步的學習。
國小生，特別是中國的國小生，由於自然的學習環境還不是特別理想，沒有語境，所以需要大量的接觸英語素材、資料。

所以國小階段，即便是低年級階段我們也應該安排一些小故事，讓學生來閱讀，來表演，這樣能夠通過學習故事，表演故事，能夠有更多語言輸入。
聽、說、讀、寫中，要屬“讀”輸入最大，而讀中，屬默讀輸入量最大，朗讀是不思考地讀，如果真正理解，只有默讀。讓學生默讀，讓他眼睛看、心理想着，輸入量大而且也能很快理解，速度也快

1、學生綜合運用能力的形成離不開閱讀能力的培養。
2、 閱讀是擴大語言輸入量的有效途徑。
3、 鞏固學過的知識。如詞彙、語法、交際用語等。
