Good morning ladies and gentlemen, teachers and my fellow friends. The title of the speech that i‘m going to talk about is on money and health. Now as you see, we have a society where people just concentrate on earning money to pay off their mortgage, credit cards, holiday expanses etc, most of them fail to notice the gradual decline in their health. To them money is much much more important than health. As it says, " money is the root of all evil." I agree with it. Therefore, it is now time for us to watch out for our health and treasure our body! Thank you!

Everyone knows how important money is in the world today. But what Qi Gong do with his hard-earned one and a half million yuan？

Mr Qi Gong，aged 79，is a well known calligrapher（書法家）in China. He became famous the hard way. Born in a poor family，he did not have much schooling until his talent attracted the attention of Professor Chen Yuan， the president of Furen University. For years Professor Chen took him under his personal care and taught him literature and calligraphy. Professor Chen thought highly of Qi Gong and helped him to find jobs of teaching at several institutions.

Years of hard work made Qi Gong an excellent teacher and outstanding calligrapher and painter. In memory of his teacher Professor Chen Yuan， Qi Gong decided in 1991 to set up a foundation to give awards. He worked hard day after day at his desk and produced more than 100 works of calligraphy，which he sold for 1，630，000 yuan. All his money went into the foundation which was named after his teacher. He did not leave a penny for himself.

What do you think money means to Qi Gong？

Different people have diffhrent views on money. It is held that money is the source of happiness. But it is also held that money is the root of evil. Those who hold the first opinion think that with money one can enjoy everything luxurious in the world; one can eat delicacies and drink good wine, can buy a luxurious house or car, and can travel around the world. In contrast, those who hold the second view think that with money some people visit prostitutes and abuse drug, others bribe government officials, manipulate an election or the parliament, even form terrorist organizations and launch unjust wars. In my opinion, money is something but not everything. Not every rich person is happy, nor is every poor person unhappy. Besides, I think money itself is neither good nor bad. It is the person who uses money that can be regarded as good or bad. Money can be used to build a country but it can also be used to destroy a country. Therefore, money itself has nothing to do with happiness or evil.

Different people have different attitudes towards example, some of the rich are very mean with their money, while some of them are quite generous. Some people lack of money but they are not absorbed in pursuit of wealth while some people regard money as everything. As far as I am concerned, money is necessary for all of us, but it is not all for us.

不同的人對於金錢持有不同的態度。比如說，有些有錢人花錢很吝嗇，而有些則很慷慨。有些人缺錢用但不沉迷於追求財富，而有些人則把金錢視爲一切。在我看來，金錢對於我們是必需的，但金錢不是我們的全部。

For one thing, money is necessary for all of us. In modern society, money is one of tools for measure the value and can be used to exchange materials. All materials we need for our basic existence is all about money. Without money, our existence will be threatened and we can not find our way to live. Therefore, all of us need to earn money to afford us and our family basic needs, such as food, clothes and house.

For another, money is not all for us. Though money can be used to exchange our basic needs, it is not almighty. For example, we cannot use money to buy a real love or ability with money. Hence, just as the saying goes, “money is good servant but a bad master”. We cannot be controlled by money so that we will not be a pathetic slave of money.

ver the past 15 years,researchers have studied the connection between money and happiness. Their findings shatter many misconceptions. Here are five of the most surprising results. 1. Everyone needs a few luxuries to be happy. A six-figure income affords a family many pleasures-- a more luxurious home, perhaps a trip to Disneyland or a fancier car. But do such things make you happier? Pleasure is not the same as happiness. Pleasure is a temporary release. Happiness comes from experiences in which one's mental and emotional energies are invested. Just as happy families value pleasures that involve personal effort, so they value possessions that have personal meaning, like Grandma's wedding ring. Unhappy people,however, are more likely to prize possessions because of their cost or utility, a car that handles well or an expensive necklace. 2. Happiness is a permanent vacation. Would you quit your job if you didn' t need the money?Many Americans said quitting work was an important reason to be rich. Yet researchers find that work is one of life's chief satisfactions for people.

A job, studies show, is more than a paycheck. Doing something well can increase confidence and self-worth. 3. A big raise would make you happy. If jobs are so important, wouldn't salary size be a gauge of job satisfaction? Americans think so. A survey found that almost 70 percent of the respondents said they would be happier if their families had twice as much household income. Yet studies show that job satisfaction comes less from how much people earn than from the challenge of their jobs and the control they are able to exert. Work that doesn't engage a person will never seem rewarding, no matter how lucrative it becomes. 4. Nothing comforts like cash. In times of crisis--a debilitating illness or loss of one's home--money can come in pretty handy. But for all its benefits, it cannot fortify you against the inevitable pain and sadness that follow the crisis. For that, researchers say, you need close friendships. "Human beings are hard-wired to be social animals". "They're not built to handle things alone." 5. Happiness and wealth aren't mutually exclusive.

It's possible to have both--or neither. But most believe that those who have happiness, in the long run, have author Oscar Wilde agreed: "Ordinary riches can be stolen from a man. Real riches cannot. In the treasury house of your soul, there are infinitely precious things that may notbe taken from you."

Last Friday, I attended an EPC class and we talked about whether money can buy happiness. As a human, we all have body, emotion and spirit. Happiness is kind of emotion or spirit for our life and the most precious thing to us. Without it, a man will feel that his misery fate has taken charge of him and the world is utterly dark and dreadful. The teacher asked us some questions about happy at first. We answered differently. My partner and I answered that happiness is a fate that we are glad to do many things and have confidence to do them well.

But how to be happy? Can money buy happiness? Obviously it can’t. In the class, we saw a sentence “Happiness is a state without any desires”. We discussed hearty about it and some of us agreed to it. They held that desires are power that can push us to keep working hard, so that we can have a better life, and then be happy. However，others did not think like that. They argued that desires come from comparison. When we do better than others and gain more than others, we just have a sense of satisfaction instead of happiness. Then, teacher asked us that if we have a lot of money, what we can do to gain happiness. Some students thought that giving money to poor people will make them happy. In the others’ opinions, using money to play together with friends and families will make them happy. In short, giving and sharing will bring happiness to us. Then, teacher showed us series of data of the happy career. These data show that barber, the happiest job, accounts for the largest proportion However, designer is the unhappiest one. The teacher said that human is a kind of social animal, so people will be happier to stay and talk with others especially in low pressure. In a word, helping others and communicating with others will make us happy.

In my opinion, Being happy is easy, because we have no reasons to be unhappy. When we meet some troubles in lives, we just try our best to overcome them without any hesitation. When I am sad, I would have a comfortable sleep. After a good sleep, I will feel much better. So I think being happy is easy for me.

When asked money and love which one is more important, different people have different ideas. As for me, love is more important. My reasons are as follows.

當問到金錢和愛情哪一個更重要時，不同的人有不同的觀點。對我而言，我覺得愛情更重要。我的原因如下。

First, money cannot buy true love. The girl who firmly stated on a TV dating show that she would rather cry in a BMW than smile on a bicycle is just a case in point. From this point we can see that, no matter how rich people are, they cannot buy true love.

首先，金錢買不到真愛。一個女孩在交友節目上堅定地說，她寧願坐在寶馬上面哭也不願意坐在自行車上面笑，就是一個很好的例子。從這一點我們可以看出，不管一個人多富有，他都買不到真愛。

Second, love is above wealth. "Naked" wedding or "naked" marriage is a hot topic these days. More and more young people begin to marry each other without a big property. In these cases, love is more important than money.

其次，愛情超越財富。“裸婚禮”或者“裸婚”是這些日子的熱題。越來越多的年輕人開始和沒有大財產的人結婚。從這種情況來看，愛情比金錢更重要。

To sum up, love is far more important than money. Provided that we lose wealth, we may regain it by working hard. But if we lose love, it will be impossible to make up for it.
