現時除了中國、朝鮮半島、越南、日本之外,蒙古、老撾、緬甸、柬埔寨、泰國、新加坡、馬來西亞、印度尼西亞等地都是最重要的節日之一。

一般認爲至少要到正月十五(上元節)新年才結束,有些地方的新年慶祝活動甚至到整個正月完畢爲止。春節與清明節、端午節、中秋節並稱爲中國漢族的`四大傳統節日。

農曆一年的最後一天(月大爲30日,月小29日),稱之爲“除夕”,除夕晚上全家人團圓吃年夜飯(農曆一年中最後一頓飯),年夜飯以後有發壓歲錢和熬年夜(守歲)的習俗,表示從農曆上一年的最後一天守到下一年的第一天。

一般指除夕和正月七年級,是一年的第一天,又叫陰曆年。但在民間,傳統意義上的春節是指從臘月初八的臘祭或臘月二十三或二十四的祭竈,一直到正月十五,其中以除夕和正月七年級爲高潮。在春節期間,中國的漢族和很多少數民族都要舉行各種活動以示慶祝。這些活動均以祭祀神佛、祭奠祖先、除舊佈新、迎禧接福、祈求豐年爲主要內容。活動豐富多彩,帶有濃郁的民族特色。

春節的名稱隨着時間而變化

春節不同時代有不同名稱。在先秦時叫“上日”、“元日”、“改歲”、“獻歲”等;到了兩漢時期,又被叫爲“三朝”、“歲旦”、“正旦”、“正日”;魏晉南北朝時稱爲“元辰”、“元日”、“元首”、 “歲朝”等;到了唐宋元明,則稱爲“元旦”、“元”、“歲日”、“新正”、“新元”等;而清代,一直叫“元旦”或“元日”。

1911年12月31日,中華民國湖北軍政府在發佈的《內務部關於中華民國改用陽曆的通諭》中,明確將年節稱爲“春節”。到1949年9月27日,中國人民政治協商會議第一屆全體會議進一步明確農曆正月七年級稱爲“春節”,“春節”之名正式列入中國節日法典。

歷史上的不同朝代,春節的時間也不一樣。夏代以一月爲一年之首;商代以十二月爲歲首,周代以十一月爲歲首,秦代以十月爲歲首。西漢時,漢武帝下詔推行太初曆,才明確規定一月七年級爲歲首,以之爲夏曆新年。

春節在公曆1月21日至2月20日之間遊動。立春則一般在2月4日或2月5日。
