在翻譯工作中，語法是組織語句結構的重要參考，英語和美語在語法上也存在一些差異。對英式英語、美式英語語法上的差異進行分析對英語翻譯大有裨益。以下我幾個英式英語和美式英語在習慣上用法不同的例子。
（1）名詞：
美國英語將其他詞類名詞化的.傾向比英國英語更爲明顯，特別是那些帶介詞的短語動詞，比如to cook out →a cook-out ;to know how →the know-how; to run down →the rundown; to be shut in →a shut-in; to stop over →the stopover等。
集合名詞做主語時，英國英語的謂語動詞可以是單數形式或者複數形式，美國英語幾乎總是用單數形式。例如 BE: They are a family who has been very influential in the history of this country. AE/BE: The committee has decided to look into the matter further. 名詞作定語時，美國英語多用單數形式，而英國英語則常用其複數形式。例如BE: The worker decided to form a new trades union. AE: The worker decided to form a new trade union.
（2）動詞 have ,get, make
當動詞have有致使之意時，美國用have，英國對上級用get，對下級用make。英語中的to have是個詞性不明確的動詞。英國人既把它用作助動詞又把它用作實義動詞，美國人則一律將它當作實義動詞來用。例如：我會讓別人也來的。BE: I will get someone come. AE: I will have someone come.
（3）形容詞：來自
在美國英語中，形容詞的比較可以跟在all the之後，表示強調。而英國英語則使用any加形容詞比較級這一形式來表示強調。例如：你還能做更好嗎？BE: Can’t you do any better than that? AE: Is that all the better you can do?
（4）冠詞：
美國英語與英國英語在冠詞用法上也有一些差異,英國英語在表示疾病的名詞之前一般要用定冠詞，而美語裏採用零冠詞。例如：(BE)the measles , the mumps , the flu , the smallpox; (AE) measles, mumps ,flu, smallpox
（5）過去時與現在完成時：
表示距現在不遠的過去所發生或完成的事情，英國英語常用現在完成時，則美國英語則傾向於使用一般過去時。例如：我已經研究過你的報告了。BE: I have studied your report already. AE: I studied your report already.
