1. 表示所有關係，用以構成名詞的所有格，如the gate of the school(校門)，the secret of success(成功的祕密)，等。
注意以下正誤表達：
正：He is a friend of my father. 他是我父親的一位朋友。
正：He is a friend of my father’s. 他是我父親的一位朋友。
正：He is a friend of mine. 他是我的一位朋友。
誤：He is a friend of me.
以下表達是錯誤的：
誤：What’s the name of you?(改爲…your name)
誤：Do you know the father of him?(改爲…his father)
誤：I will show the books of me.(改爲…my books)
但是以下表達卻是對的(of表示動賓關係)：
正：I hate the sight of him. 我討厭看到他。
正：His criticism of her is serious. 他對她的批評是嚴肅 的。
2. 與 age, shape, size, colour, height, design, weight 等名詞連用，可用作表語或定語;其中的`介詞 of 有時可省略。如：
The two boys are (of) the same height. 這兩個男孩一樣高。
Here is a piece of wood (of) the right size. 這有一塊木頭，其大小剛好適合。
When I was (of) your age, I lived in the country. 我像你這個年紀的時候，我住在鄉下。
3. 與某些名詞(如help, value, interest, importance等)連用，相當於形容詞，可用作定語或表語。如：
It’s not of much value. 這沒有多大價值。
This subject is of great interest to me. 這門學科對我來說是很有趣的。
The dictionary is of much help to the students. 這本字典對學生幫助很大。
4. 與 hear, talk, know, speak 等動詞連用，表示一種間接性，大意爲“涉及到”。如：
I’ve never heard of anyone doing a thing like that. 我從未聽說有人做過那種事。
Mary is talking of looking for another job. 瑪麗說起要另找一份工作。
I don’t know the writer, but I know of him. 我不認識這個作家，但我聽說過他。

5. 與表示動作的名詞或動名詞連用，表示動賓關係。如：
The writing of the letter took me three hours. 寫這封信花了我3個小時。
Loss of health is worse than loss of wealth. 失去財富比失去健康更糟。
6. 表示比較範圍，意爲“在……當中”。如：
Of all the choices, this is the best. 在所有選擇中，這種最好。

7. 與 careless, clever, cruel, foolish, friendly, generous, good, impolite, kind, nice, polite, right, rude, selfish, silly, stupid, wise, wrong等表示人的品行和特點的形容詞連用，用於 It’s+adj.+of sb (to do sth) 句型。如：
