I'm just looking. Can I help you find anything?"

Where are your fitting rooms?

Does this come in other colors?

Do you have this in other sizes?

Do you have any of these in stock?

Can I put this on hold?

I'd like a gift receipt for this.

Can I get a price check for this?

What's your return policy?

Do you provide gift-wrapping?

In the Western world, people love to say 'thank you' even for the smallest things. If you buy something at the store, the customer and the clerk both want to say 'thank you.' When someone pours you a drink, we also want to say thank you. When someone gives you praise, we don't say "Where, where," like in China. In the West we just say 'thank you.' However, it is important to use other words to express "thank you" that will show you can speak fluent English. And your English is very fluent, right?

THANK YOU! Now I am starting to understand. You are saying it is important to use many synonyms for "thank you."

You bet. Now try using these synonyms for "thank you" the next time someone helps or praises you.

Gordon: You are correct, how can I assist you?

Molly: I need a book that will teach me how to speak fluent English.

Gordon: Do you like speaking English?

Molly: Yes, but English is hard.

Molly: Thanks a bunch, I owe you one.

Gordon: You're welcome. Can I offer you a better way to study English?

Molly: Of course! I would love that. How can I master English quickly?

Gordon: You should find a foreign boyfriend, like me. So every time when we are together, it will be like English class.

Molly: In your dreams! I mean, thanks, but no, thanks, sir. I don't owe you one. I don't appreciate it. No need, maybe next time, or maybe never!

Gordon: I was just kidding. I was making a joke. The best way to learn is to log on to and sign up for the cool English newsletters there. Don't forget to practise everyday.

Molly: Now that is good advice. I appreciate it, thanks a million. You're the best, I will never forget this.

1) How old are you? Why do you look so elderly? Are you really old?

2) How poor are you? How much money do you make? What's your salary like? How much bread do you rake in?

3) How fat are you? How much do you weigh? Shouldn't you be on a diet?

Note if you ask these or other Rude questions, people will answer with one or more of the following:

a) How dare you ask such a question?

b) I am not telling you, it is a secret.

c) I am sorry, that is personal.

d) You might have a big mouth, so I can't tell you.

g) Where did you get your poor manners?

Remember, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do," so don't be a Rude Dude! In addition, if some one asks you a rude question, try using one of the above responses.

Dialogue

Molly: How's business?

Gordon: Only so-so, and you?

Molly: Things couldn't be better, I quit smoking. I feel like a new person.

Gordon: May I ask you a few questions about your new life?

Molly: Shoot. Anything for you!

Gordon: Cool, now that you stopped smoking, how much do you weigh? How fat are you? Shouldn't you go on a diet?

Molly: How dare you ask such a question? That is quite rude.

Gordon: Sorry about that, I will ask another question. How old are you?

Molly: Oh my god, a lady never tells.

Gordon: You must be elderly if you don't want to say. Well, I only have one question left.

Molly: You had better not ask about my salary -- that would be rude.

Gordon: I don't want to know how much you rake in, I just want to know how much you will lend me?

Molly: Finally a question I am willing to answer. The answer is zero. Zip, nil. One minus one.

Gordon: Man, fat old people are not very nice.
