古典文學泛指各民族的古代文學作品，是文學的一部分，是現代文學的發展基礎，它是承上啓下的，是文學發展史上不可缺少的部分。它是中國文學最根本的東西。 現在所謂的'古典文學，也專指優秀的、有一定價值的古代文學作品。“古典”在拉丁文中是“第一流的、典範的”意思。歐洲文藝復興時期，文藝理論家以古希臘、羅馬的優秀作品爲典範，稱爲古典文學。在中國，把從遠古流傳下來的原始歌謠和神話傳說，直到五四以前大量的有一定價值的文學作品，叫古典文學。
