在討論定語從句時從先行詞與定語從句的角度看來，有限定性和非限定性定語從句兩種情況。詳解如下。
1.限定性定語從句
限定性定語從句在句中的主要作用是修飾前面的先行詞，並且兩者之間緊密聯繫，無逗號。如出現關係代詞是that的情況，that是可以省略的。在句中起修飾限定作用，不能不省去。
sports meeting will be held tomorrow when all the things are prepared.明天所有的'事情都準備就緒時，便會舉行運動會。（限定性）
think about the final exam which (that)will become a standard of scores in the semester.我們都在想着這學期將會作爲評分標準的期末考試。（that可以省略）
2.非限定性定語從句
非限定性定語從句在句中的主要作用是既可以修飾先行詞也可用修飾前面的主句。有逗號與前面的先行詞隔開，可以看作一個並列句。注意這裏便不可用that作爲關係詞。
2.1修飾前面的整個主句
a terrible thing！Mary missed the last bus, which let her late for the class.太糟糕了！瑪麗錯過了最後一班公交，使得她上課遲到。
cousin failed the examination, which made her pretty sad.我表妹考試失利的事讓她非常難過
2.2修飾前面的先行詞
friend told me she had a nightmare, which scared her a lot.我朋友告訴我說，她做了一個令她害怕的惡夢。
