是不是隻要每天聽，拼命聽，把自己“沉浸”在英語環境中聽力就會自然而然變好呢？並不是這麼簡單。聽力訓練中有一條最淺顯但也最容易被人忽略的原則是：你最多隻能聽懂你讀得懂的東西。（請把這句話讀三遍，因爲它非常重要，後面的一系列操作也是圍繞它展開的。）這句話包含了三層意思：
提高聽力最關鍵的地方並不在於你聽了多少東西，而是在於你的閱讀基礎（包括詞彙量，語法基礎），閱讀基礎越好，能看得懂的東西越多，聽力過程也會越順暢。
聽力訓練的目標是努力聽懂能讀得懂的東西，聽懂該聽懂的，對於讀不懂的東西，只能通過提高詞彙量來解決。
要根據自己的實際水平（可以大致等同於詞彙量水平）選擇合適的聽力材料
舉個例子，很多人一提到練聽力就說要去聽VOA和BBC，但事實上對大多數人來說，這並不是一種好方法。爲什麼？看個例子，我在VOA官網上隨機找了一段VOA常速聽力文本，現在請你一口氣把它讀完，中間不能回頭：

好，現在問自己幾個問題：你讀懂這段聽力材料了嗎？中間碰到了多少生詞？如果是實際聽力的話有多少單詞可能會反應不過來？
如果這段材料你無法讀懂的話，那麼聽上100遍也沒用，該聽不懂的地方一定不會讓你聽懂的。
事實上，VOA（常速）和BBC對初學者來說並不是一種友好的聽力材料，我粗略統計過兩者的文本，要比較順暢地舒服地聽懂它們詞彙量少說也要在12000以上，能達到這個詞彙量的早就不是初學者了。不考慮學習者實際水平就推薦材料的`行爲，其實都是耍流氓。
聽力訓練中並沒有一種萬金油方法，不要迷信，也不要盲從，一定要根據自己的實際情況去選擇適合自己的材料。
具體來說，選擇聽力材料時要考慮你的詞彙量水平，在選聽力材料時可以先讀一讀它的文本，確定一下難度，比如說對於下面這段聽力材料（選自CNN Student News）：
Massive corruption charges in the world of international soccer. U.S. prosecutors say some officials with FIFA, the group that governs soccer worldwide, have accepted more than $150 million in bribes over the past 24 years. American officials say bribes influence which countries got to host the World Cup, who could televise soccer games and where they`d be held.
They were expected to uphold the rules that keep soccer honest and to protect the integrity of the game. Instead, they corrupted the business of worldwide soccer to serve their interest and to enrich themselves. This Department of Justice is determined to end these practices, to root out corruption and to bring wrongdoers to justice.
對很多人來說，上面的這段纔是“友好”的材料，難度適中，生詞量適中，是比較合適的聽力訓練材料。
我們可以粗略把目前市面上的聽力材料按難度進行劃分，初階的材料有新概念英語2，VOA慢速英語，高中英語聽力教材，華東師範大學外語系曾經出過一套書叫“英語聽力入門 Step By Step”，裏面的第一冊和第二冊也可以算是初階材料，高階的材料則有V0A常速，BBC,CNN，新概念4，經濟學人，原版有聲書等。初階和高階的材料都比較豐富，問題可能會出在中級階段上。
你可能現在就處於“聽VOA慢速覺得太簡單但聽VOA常速又聽不懂”這個節點上。我把它叫做中級向高級的提升瓶頸期（有點類似於經濟學上的“中等收入陷阱”，跨過了就是歐美，跨不過就成了拉美），只要能夠跨過這個瓶頸期，後面就好受多了。
目前市面上好的中級階段材料並不是很多，比如說新概念3：這個大家應該都聽說過了，編者亞歷山大是英文教育專家，新概念3裏面的文章無論是用詞，文采還是故事性都堪稱一流，它其實是作爲教材使用的，每篇文章都有對應的音頻，作爲聽力材料練習也可以。
