A

Dad was always full of advice, but one of the biggest lessons he taught me one summer was about having a strong work ethic(道德). When my brother and I were growing up, we mowed(修剪) yards during the summer to earn pocket change. Dad was our salesman. He told our neighbors about our service and offered a price they could not refuse. My brother and I got $ 10 per yard. I later found out that our friends were charging $ 20 or more for the same amount of work.

Every time we headed out to mow lawns(草坪), Dad was there to watch. I used to wonder why he came with us. He stood supervising(監督) our work in the heat when he could have been inside relaxing with air conditioning and an icy drink.

One day we were cutting our next-door neighbor’s yard, he always waited until the grass was knee-high to call us over. To make matters worse, we had an old lawn mower. This particular afternoon, I was finishing up and was tired and sweaty.

I was just about to cut off the lawn mower when I saw Dad pointing to one piece of grass. He yelled, “You missed a piece.”

I frowned, hoping he would let it slide and let me go home. He kept pointing. So, tired and disappointed, I went back to cut that piece of grass. I said to myself, “That one piece isn’t hurting anyone. Why won’t he just let it go?”

But when I reached adulthood, I understood his message ---When you’re running a business, the work you do says a great deal about you. If you want to be seen as an entrepreneur(企業家) with honesty, you must deliver a quality product. That single blade of grass meant the job was not done.

Other neighbors took notice of the good work we did and we soon got more business. We started out with one client, but by the end of the summer we had five.

21. Why did more and more people ask the brothers to mow their yards?

A. They mowed it faster. B. They mowed it carefully.

C. They had a quality mower. D. They charged the same as others.

22. The underlined word in the last paragraph “client” probably means _______.

A. mower B. product C. customer D. yard

23. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Father’s Story B. Honesty C. Family Matters D. Supervising

B

For many people, fishing is the most relaxing way to spend the day. And in the winter months the most popular angling(釣魚) activity is ice fishing.

Although not all are interested in it, many anglers actually prefer fishing through the ice to open-water fishing. For one thing, anglers can get just about anywhere on the lake during ice fishing season, something they can’t do without a boat during the open-water season. Actually every fish that’s available to anglers in the summer can be caught through the ice ---- some are even caught more frequently in the winter.

Once you’ve spent a little time on the ice, you’ll soon see a different picture. Ice fishing is more than just a way to fill the long days of winter. It is a chance to breathe the cold, clean winter air, to spend quiet time outdoors with family and friends, and to relax and collect one’s thoughts away from the hustle and bustle(喧囂) of a busy world.

Just walking on the ice can be an interesting experience, especially when no snow blocks the view of the water below. However, as with any outdoor activity, safety should be your top concern. When it comes to ice safety, you should steer clear of (避開)dark spots or places where the snow looks discolored.

Some other good rules to follow include:

1. Never fish without any companions.

2. Always test the ice with a spud(小鋤頭).

3. Take emergency items, such as a life jacket and ice picks(碎冰錐).

4. Take a cell phone with you in case you need to call for help.

5. Dress in your warmest winter clothes and bring a chair to sit on.

the author’s opinion, ice fishing _________.

A. is generally more dangerous than open-water fishing

B. allows anglers fewer chances to catch certain kinds of fish

C. gives anglers total freedom to move about on the lake

D. requires more skills and experience than open-water fishing

third paragraph tells us about ____________.

A. the rules of ice fishing

B. the advantages of ice fishing

C. the ways of ice fishing

D. the locations of ice fishing

author advises those who want to go ice fishing_______.

A. not to make a phone call B. not to use ice picks

C. not to sit on the ice D. not to fish alone

author probably considers ice fishing ________.

A. boring B. interesting

C. challenging D. encouraging

He explained that he had found two Sasquatches. 34 Both of them were chasing each other and wrestling on the ground. While he was watching, the two creatures walked to some rocks and sat down, as if to have a rest. Larry noticed that, judging by the way it walked, the white one appeared to have a bad leg. 書面表達:

Dear Editor,

Recently, we have had a heated discussion on whether we should take part in school activities. There are different opinions among students concerning the topic.

Some students are in favor of taking part in school activities ,thinking after long hours of study, they can relax themselves by taking part in school activities. Besides, they think learning from textbooks is not their only task and they should take every chance to get some practical knowledge ,and also they can improve their social abilities through taking part in school activities.

While others hold the opposite opinion ,arguing that learning is the most important task for them and they should make the most of time to study. What’s more, they feel that school activities have little to do with their further development.

From my point of view, taking part in school activities has more advantages than disadvantages. For one thing, we can learn a great deal from other students we meet in activities. For another thing, the modern society requires young students many qualities, so only learning from textbooks is not enough.
