書育人，既體現了教師工作的專業化特徵，又反映出了對師德的極高要求。無疑，教師工作是專業特徵十分突出的、不可任意替代的、具有豐富內涵的工作：
一、要具備高尚的思想品德素質。
教師的人格形象對學生是無形卻又是最有力的教育，是一種“不求而至，不爲而成”的潛移默化、潤物無聲的最有效的教育。教師的職業性質決定了教師不可能成爲經濟上的富翁，但可以成爲精神上的富有者，成爲受社會尊敬的人。教師應注重自我精神、情操的提升和陶冶，具備強烈的事業心和責任感，愛崗敬業，樂於奉獻，崇尚事業勝於物質生活。當老師的應兼教怎樣做人，率先垂範，爲人師表。
二、要具備專業理論和科研能力素質。
一個好的教師，應有精深博新的專業知識。特別是大學教師，他們不但應是本學科的集大成者，還應是研究者、思想者、創造者。能成爲研究者、思想者、創造者，是“學而不厭”、“研而不厭”、“思而不厭”的結果。
專業基礎知識、專業理論水平和科學研究能力是教師從事教學工作的基本素質，是教師提高教學質量、培養傑出人才的基本保證。“科學研究應當走在教學的前面”，教師致力於科研可以爲教學提供最新的研究成果，可以增強教學內容的'理論深度和新度。
三、要具備人文科學知識與自然科學知識兼容幷蓄的知識結構素質。
對於教師來說，博學多識是做一個好教師應具備的素質。作爲21世紀的高校教師更應力求博學多識，不斷完善自己的知識結構。隨着科學技術日新月異的發展，學科間相互滲透、交叉互動愈益明顯，教學工作正面臨着的挑戰。教師只有具備完善的知識結構，才能爲專業理論知識的教授奠定雄厚的根基，使自己的教學內容達到深度與廣度的統一。
四、要具備師範性素質。
它包括三個層面：知識層面。除了上述專業理論知識及相關的人文科學知識、自然科學知識外，教師還應通曉教育基本理論，如教育學、心理學及有關學科教學法的理論知識，並運用這些理論來指導教學實踐，努力探索、掌握教學規律，從而不斷提高教學水平。能力層面。教師的基本能力包括設計操作能力、組織管理能力、課堂講授能力、語言表達能力、書寫能力、運用現代化教育手段的能力、開拓創新能力。心理品質層面。教師優雅莊重的外在形象，與其內在的知識修養、心理品質密切相關。
對於廣大教師來說，最爲重要的就是提高自己的師德。
