Last week Mrs Mills went to London. She does not know London very well, and she lost her way.

上星期米爾斯夫人去了倫敦。她對倫敦不很熟悉,因此迷了路。

Suddenly, she saw a man near a bus-stop. “ I can ask him the way.” She said to herself.

突然,她在公共汽車站附近看到一個男人。“我可以向他問路,”她想。

“Excuse me,” she said.“Can you tell me the way to King Street please?”

“對不起,您能告訴我到國王街怎麼走嗎?”她說。

The man smiled pleasantly. He did not understand English! He spoke German. He was a tourist.

這人友好地笑了笑。他不懂英語!他講德語。他是個旅遊者。

Then he put his hand into his pocket, and took out a phrase-book.

然後他把手伸進了衣袋,掏出了一本常用語手冊。

He opened the book and found a phrase. He read the phrase slowly.

他翻開書找到了一條短語。他緩慢地讀着短語。

“I am sorry,” he said. “ I do not speak English.”

know…well這一短語意爲"對……瞭解"。又如:

I don't know him very well.

我不太瞭解他。

2.…and she lost her way. …因此她迷路了。

句中的 and當"所以"講,表示結果。 lose one's way, 迷路。

(sb.) the way, (向某人)問路。

to oneself, 心中暗想。

注意:talk to oneself意爲"自言自語地說"。

tell sb. the way(to), 告訴某人(去……的)路。

himself= cut his face。

以整體代替部分是英語中的一種修辭格,叫提喻(merism )。

  語法 Grammar in use

1.副詞

副詞(adverb)這個詞的`本意是補充動詞的意義。這就是許多副詞的作用。它們可以通過修飾動詞告訴我們有關句中某個動作的情況,也就是告訴我們某事是如何、何時、何地等發生或進行的。

副詞可以是單個的詞(如 slowly)或詞組(如 very well)。單一副詞既有以-ly結尾的也有不以-ly結尾的(如 quickly, fast)。

形容詞向副詞的轉換一般遵循3個規則:

(1)在形容詞後面直接加-ly,如:

quick----quickly

hurried----hurriedly

pleasant----pleasantly

warm----warmly

(2)以-y結尾的形容詞,則把-y改成-i,再加-ly,如:

thirsty----thirstily

happy----happily

(3)形容詞與副詞形式相同:

late----late

fast----fast

hard----hard

well----well

(1)迷失;(使)迷路:

She did not know London very well, and she lost her way.
