漢語因漢族社會在發展過程中出現過程度不同的分化和統一而逐漸產生了方言(dialect)。現代漢語有各種不同的方言，他們分佈的區域很廣。現代漢語各方言之間的差異表現在語音、詞彙、語法三個方面，語音方面尤爲突出。但由於這些方言和共同語之間在語音上都有一定的對應規律，詞彙、語法方面也有許多相同之處.因此它們不是獨立的'語言。當前語言學界對現代漢語方言劃分的意見還未完全達成一致，大多數人認爲現代漢語有七大方言。
