A

Red squirrels used to be a common sight in Britain. But since the gray squirrels were introduced from North America, the red squirrels became fewer and fewer. Now there are fewer than 140,000 red squirrels left. People are allowed to kill the gray squirrels in Britain.

On first sight, the two types of squirrel are similar. They both have a long tail, large eyes, small ears and powerful back legs. However, grey squirrels are much stronger and heavier than red squirrels. Adult grey squirrels weigh between 400 and 800 grams. This allows them to store more fat and helps them to live through a hard winter.

Why are red squirrels losing out in competition with grey squirrels? Size is one reason, but there are others. Red squirrels live high up in trees, while grey squirrels spend more of their time on the ground. This means any loss of forests greatly influences the population of red squirrels. Another reason for the grey squirrel’s success is its ability to use food provided by people, which helps them to live in towns and cities. The other problem for the red squirrel is disease. Both squirrels carry a certain virus(病毒). This doesn’t seem to hurt grey squirrels, while it can cause red squirrels’ death.

根據短文內容,判斷下列句子是否正確,對的塗(A),錯的塗(B)。

51. Killing the gray squirrels is against the law in Britain.

52. Adult grey squirrels weigh 800 grams at least.

53. The population of red squirrels will be greatly affected if more forests are destroyed.

54. Grey squirrels are able to use food provided by people.

55. More grey squirrels die of the certain virus than red squirrels.

B、C兩篇,根據短文內容,從每小題A、B、C三個選項中選出一個最佳答案。

B

Dear Mr. Wilson,

I have eaten in your restaurant many times and have always been happy with the food and service, but what happened last Sunday made me very angry. It was my son’s birthday so we booked a non-smoking table for 7:30 p.m. We arrived on time but were told that our table was not yet ready. At 8:00 p.m., we were given a table in the smoking area. A lot of people were smoking so it was uncomfortable and unhealthy.

Our first waitress, Janet, was very polite. She gave us free drinks for waiting so long. My wife ordered some fried noodles. When she had eaten most of her meal, she found a dead insect in her noodles. She felt sick and wanted to leave. The waitress said sorry and took the food away. I asked for the bill, hoping not to pay for my wife's meal. Nobody came. After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager(經理). The headwaiter told us that you were on holiday. I complained(抱怨)again about the terrible insect. He told me Janet had finished work. He didn't believe my story and gave me a bill for three meals including my wife's. I argued with him but had to pay in the end.

The waitress, Janet, was always friendly, but I would like the impolite headwaiter to say sorry to me. I also want the payment for our meal given back. It cost $68.

You can call me at 742-3254 if you want more information. Thank you for your attention.

Yours Sincerely,

Nick Bell

Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries. Have a look in your fridge. Perhaps there are apples from California or potatoes from Egypt. You may be amazed how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from field to plate, is called “food miles”. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer(消費者). Why is this, and what are the effects of these long distances?

In the past, farmers sold their food in the local market and the consumers did not travel very far to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally and they could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available in winter if we addition, some countries have to import(進口) most of their food because they have difficult climates. The UAE (阿聯酋), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries.

What’s wrong with “food miles”? Isn’t it a good way to increase international trade? I believe these “food miles” are affecting people for a number of reasons. First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, trucks, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil, so there is more pollution and more global warming. In addition, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.

61. According to the passage, “food miles” refers to the distance that food travels _________

A. from the farmer’s field to the consumer

B. from the farmer’s field to the local market

C. from the local market to the consumer

62. The underlined word “available” in Paragraph 2 means “______”.

A. able to get B. impossible to buy C. difficult to plant

63. The UAE imports most of its food because of________.

A. better taste B. difficult climates C. modern technology

64. The writer uses the LAST paragraph mainly to encourage readers to ______.

A. use more oil B. develop international trade C. buy more local food

65. Which is one of the effects of “food miles” mentioned in the passage?

A. It causes more traffic accidents.

B. There is more global pollution and warming.

C. Farmers no longer sell food in the local markets.

Mrs. Miller raised a lot of ducks in the lake behind her home. 66 She sold their eggs to the market to earn money for her family.

Once a young man called Jack went to the village. He sat on a rock by the lake and began to fish. 67 He became angry and thought the ducks frightened the fish away. He brought out a gun and shot one. The others were so frightened that they swam away quickly. Mrs. Miller heard it and hurried to the lake. 68 She knew the young man, whose father was the head of the police station in the town. The young man didn’t mind and went on fishing.

“Look what you’ve done!” said Mrs. Miller.

“ 69 ” asked the young man. “I had twenty ducks and only one could dance when it heard music,” said Mrs. Miller. “The king likes all kinds of rare(稀有的)animals, you know. I’m sure he’ll tell me to send the duck to him if he knows about it. 70 ” The young man was afraid the king would learn about it. He asked Mrs. Miller to keep the secret for him and paid off her a lot of money.
